A day of palace, temple and crafts

From the first station to the final station; travel to and from your hotel is excluded.

Begin at the palace, continue to Jogyesa and Insa-dong, then finish at the western stream with two food breaks across the day.

This route connects Gyeongbokgung Palace, Jogyesa Temple, Insa-dong, Cheonggyecheon western stretch.

Gyeongbokgung Palace

Explore the palace courtyards and central axis; check closing days and admission.

Station code: L3S0317

Use the main courtyards and the Gyeonghoeru area as the framework of your palace visit. Notice the sequence of gates and open spaces before looking closely at roof details and stone steps. The allowance excludes the neighbouring museums, which deserve their own visit if history is your priority.

Check official closing days, last admission and ticket arrangements before setting out. Guard ceremonies follow a separate timetable and are not guaranteed by this route. If a ceremony matters to you, adjust the sequence around it; take breaks before extending the walk into further palace grounds.

Suggested visit allowance: 100–130 minutes

Jogyesa Temple

Visit the temple courtyard and trees, quietly following worship-site guidance.

Station code: L1S0152

Look at the main hall, mature trees and painted eaves from the courtyard, slowing down enough to notice the sounds around you. This is an active place of worship with a different rhythm from the shopping streets nearby, making it a useful quiet pause in the route.

Services and ceremonies take priority over sightseeing. Follow signs about entry and photography, and remember that lantern displays change with the season and event calendar. Save tea for Insa-dong so the temple visit remains separate from your meal allowance.

Suggested visit allowance: 25–35 minutes

Insa-dong

Browse craft shops and gallery streets; tea and snacks use the separate meal allowance.

Station code: L3S0318

Start with craft, paper and gallery windows along the main street, then choose one or two side lanes. Follow a material that interests you, such as paper, ceramics or carved seals, to give the browsing a theme instead of trying to visit every souvenir shop.

Tea and food have a separate allowance. If a popular café has a long queue, another nearby choice may preserve the pace of the day. Shops and galleries keep individual hours, and booked workshops are excluded. Recheck your onward direction before leaving the lanes.

Suggested visit allowance: 60–80 minutes

Cheonggyecheon western stretch

Walk only between Cheonggye Plaza and Gwangtonggyo; watch for steps and weather closures.

Station code: L5S2534

Keep to the western section between Cheonggye Plaza and Gwangtonggyo, noticing changes in water, bridge shapes and street level. Descending from the busy city changes both the view and the soundscape. Return to street level at your chosen bridge rather than continuing indefinitely eastward.

Some entrances use steps; check suitable ramps and exits if you need step-free access. Follow closures during heavy rain or maintenance and use street-level paths instead. The distant Cheonggyecheon Museum is excluded. Orient yourself from the bridge before continuing to a palace or market.

Suggested visit allowance: 30–40 minutes
